PHRASES

A Phrase is a group of words, forming part of a sentence. It often has no finite verb and does not make complete sense.

Phrases help extend sentences.

The cat caught the rat.
The cat, a very cunning animal, caught the rat.
The cat, a very cunning animal, caught the rat with a white spot.

Adjectival phrases

Describe or qualify a noun or pronouns. The road to the snowfields was slippery and wet. (Describing which road)

Adverbial phrases

Act as extended adverbs and describe or modify verbs by telling how, when, where and why.

The cat caught the rat in the barn. The bus ran off the side of the road. At nightfall, the monsoonal winds fell.

Noun phrases

Are equivalent of nouns and are often placed immediately after a noun.

A phrase is a group of words without a verb. The inspector demanded to see my parking coupon.
