Act as extended adverbs and describe or modify verbs by telling how, when, where and why. |
The cat caught the rat in the barn. The bus ran off the side of the road. At nightfall, the monsoonal winds fell. |

Noun phrases |
Are equivalent of nouns and are often placed immediately after a noun. |
A phrase is a group of words without a verb. The inspector demanded to see my parking coupon. |
