SENTENCES -Introduction

A sentence always has a verb and makes sense by itself.

The following clues help you recognise a sentence

1. A sentence always makes sense by itself

The cat climbed the tree

2. If a phrase does not make sense by itself, it must be a sentence fragment.

After the heavy rainfall.

3. A sentence must contain a verb. (action word)

He ran to the bus stop.

4. A sentence must end with a question mark, exclamation mark or full stop.

Where are you going? I love you!

5. A sentence always begins with a capital letter.

The ball smashed the window.

6. A sentence can ask a question.

How far is it to Sydney?

The cat climbed the tree This is a sentence as it has a verb
After the heavy rainfall. Not a sentence as it does not have a verb nor does it make sense on its own. After the heavy rainfall, the cat climbed the tree. A complete sentence
A sentence is a complete idea. When the bell rang. A sentence fragment begs more information even if they do have verbs.
