The following clues help you recognise a sentence |
|
1. A sentence always makes sense by itself |
The cat climbed the tree |
|
2. If a phrase does not make sense by itself, it must be a sentence fragment. |
After the heavy rainfall. |
|
3. A sentence must contain a verb. (action word) |
He ran to the bus stop. |
|
4. A sentence must end with a question mark, exclamation mark or full stop. |
Where are you going? I love you! |
|
5. A sentence always begins with a capital letter. |
The ball smashed the window. |
|
6. A sentence can ask a question. |
How far is it to Sydney? |
| The cat climbed the tree | This is a sentence as it has a verb |
| After the heavy rainfall. | Not a sentence as it does not have a verb nor does it make sense on its own. | After the heavy rainfall, the cat climbed the tree. A complete sentence |
| A sentence is a complete idea. | When the bell rang. | A sentence fragment begs more information even if they do have verbs. |
